Independent insurance agents give back to their communities in many different ways, one of which is to encourage college students to explore topics of highway safety, new technology and personal responsibility.

HomeInsurance.com, an independent insurance agency that operates the Quotes.Safeco.com site, will award a college scholarship worth $1,500 to an eligible college student.

To enter this Contest, choose from one of two essay topics about driving safety, write your response in 600 to 800 words and post your essay onto your blog site. If you do not currently have a blog, you can create your own blog free on Google’s Blogger.com, Wordpress.com or other sites. Judges from HomeInsurance.com will choose the winning essay based on creativity, insight and the quality of writing. Essays must be between 600 and 800 words in length and be properly submitted no later than 5 p.m. ET on October 30th, 2016.

If you write the winning essay, you’ll receive a $1,500 scholarship, and you agree that your writing may be featured on the Quotes.Safeco.com blog.

Only online essays will be considered. The essay topic must be one of the two options above regarding driving safety. Entries must be between 600 and 800 words.

Essays must be between 600 and 800 words in length and be properly submitted no later than 5 p.m. ET October 30th, 2016. All essays must be submitted by providing a URL to the applicant’s essay on his or her blog. Entries that do not meet these criteria will be ineligible.

Eligibility Requirements

All applicants must be U.S. citizens or permanent legal residents of the United States and must be enrolled on a full-time basis (per school requirements) and be in good academic standing at a school accredited by one or more of the nationally recognized accrediting agencies listed by the U.S. Department of Education, including a two- or four-year college or university, or a graduate school program.

Employees of Sponsor and Safeco Insurance, and their parent companies, subsidiaries, affiliates, distributors and advertising, promotion and Internet agencies, and members of the immediate family or household of any such employee, are not eligible.

Prize

One (1) applicant (the "recipient") will receive a one-time $1,500 scholarship to be applied to qualified college or graduate school expenses (including tuition, fees, books, and on-campus room and board) for the 2016-2017 or 2017-2018 academic year. Scholarship funds are provided by HomeInsurance.com, LLC (the "Company"), and will be made payable directly via mail to the registrar of the accredited college or university last designated by the recipient as of December 10, 2016.

Recipient Selection and Announcements

After the October 30, 2016, deadline, the recipient will be selected by a team of judges following review of all eligible entries received prior to the deadline. Entries will be judged on creativity and insight, writing quality, and research quality and veracity. Judges will include HomeInsurance.com’s Director of Marketing, Senior Web Copywriter, Copy Editor and Analysts. If the recipient is disqualified or fails to contact Company within 24 hours of being notified of the results, Company reserves the right to determine an alternate recipient or not to award the scholarship, in its sole discretion.

The recipient will be announced on November 30, 2016 on Quotes.Safeco.com and notified directly by the Company by email at the email address provided by the recipient upon submission of his or her entry. The recipient's essay may be posted on the Quotes.Safeco.com blog.

  • A. Each applicant releases the Company and its employees and agents from any liability or claim of any kind or nature for any loss, claim, damages,or injury of any kind associated with participation in this Contest and acceptance, possession or use of any prize.
  • B. All applicants accept and agree to be bound by these rules and Company's decisions relating to participation in the Contest, selection of recipients, and awarding of scholarship, all such decisions being final.
  • C. Each applicant agrees that South Carolina law governs this Contest without regard to conflicts of law principles, and consents to the jurisdiction and venue of the federal, state, and local courts of Lancaster County, South Carolina, for the resolution of all disputes pertaining to or arising from this Contest.
  • D. The recipient must complete an affidavit of eligibility and release (to be signed by his/her parent or legal guardian, if the recipient is a minor), on forms to be provided by the Company.
  • E. The recipient must be actively enrolled full-time as a freshman, sophomore, junior, senior or grad student as of March 30, 2017.
  • F. It is the recipient's responsibility to verify receipt of funds with his/her designated institution and notify the Company should the award check not arrive on or about 30 days from the issue date.
  • G. By entering, each applicant represents that his/her submission is a work of the applicant's own original authorship, and agrees that the Company will have a perpetual, royalty-free, non-exclusive, worldwide right and license to use the submission in any manner.
  • H. The Company reserves the right to disqualify any entry for any reason, including without limitation: materials not suitable for general public viewing; obscene, lewd or offensive materials; the use of third party content or other materials not authored by the applicant; and materials previously published or entered into any other competition.
  • I. The Company is not responsible for lost, late, damaged or illegible submissions, faulty transmissions, or submissions containing any virus or other system malfunction. Judges' decisions are final.
  • J. Any taxes are recipient's responsibility.
  • K. The Company reserves the right to discontinue or cancel this Contest at any time by providing notice, including in the event of fewer than 20 applicants. The notice will be provided on Quotes.Safeco.com.
  • L. Only one entry per person will be accepted.
